Christy and Libby Hughes, Owners

The fifth of eight children, Christy was born and reared in Co. Longford, Ireland. He attended Catering College in Athenry, Co. Galway, where he gained knowledge of all aspects of the restaurant industry. After a number of years in fine-dining restaurants in his native Ireland, Christy emigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in March of 1974, sponsored by his sister, Margaret, and by November of that year was the General Manager of The Dubliner Irish Pub on Capitol Hill. Christy met his wife, Libby Byrne – a native of Washington, DC – at the Dubliner and together they went on to own and operate Ireland’s Four Provinces in Cleveland Park. A few years later they opened Ireland’s Four Provinces in Falls Church, VA. When the property formerly known as the Inn at Glen Echo came on the market they knew they had an opportunity to create something special, and with that The Irish Inn was born.

Ted Hughes, Executive Chef

Ted’s passion for quality, farm-fresh ingredients began early in his life as he grew up living on a small farm in Upstate New York. After landing a job in a French restaurant in college, Ted switched his major from Chemistry to Food and Hotel Management. Paris, France was not far behind where he worked and educated himself in Classical French Cuisine. From there, he traveled many places including Napa Valley, California, Amman, Jordan and Puerto Rico, finally settling in Northern Virginia. Ted’s experiences working under many world-class chefs gave him a well-rounded education in the amazing diversity and history of what is now considered to be “Modern Cuisine.”

Fernando Villanueva, Sous Chef

Saoirse Maguire, Manager

Saoirse was born and raised in Dublin. After attending the Dublin Institute of Technology for hospitality he came to US, first at Mackinac Island, MI’s Mission Point Resort, where she worked and supervised for four seasons in their fine dining restaurant and bar and grill. From there she worked in various bars and restaurants in the Chicago area, and has landed here with us in The Irish Inn in 2012.

Frank Cassidy, Manager

Born in the border town of Clones In county Monaghan, son of a pub owner. Spent my weekends bottling Guinness, Harp and Smithwicks. You might say that I was born in the business. After secondary school came Shannon Hotel College. Much later a Masters in hospitality management. Lived and worked in Switzerland, various cities in the U.K. and the U.S. and now almost 9 years at the Irish Inn.
